I just want to thank all you Brickey’s for putting on that event at the park tonight. It was truly amazing! Mia, tonight I was yet again reminded, like I am everyday, what an amazing person you are, why you are my hero, and why you are the most incredible person I have, and will ever meet! Being at that park tonight was such an incredible experience and one I will never forget, especially when you and your fellow transplant friends let those doves free. I must admit, I was fighting back the tears, tears of total happiness :).
Also, I’m not sure if you guys were aware of this but something else pretty miraculous happened tonight that won’t happen for about another 105.5 years! Starting at about 4:30pm today, the earth, sun, and venus were all inline with each other and it continued through your event at the park. There is no way that happened by coincidence on your one year anniversary! Just goes to show how amazing you and your family are Mia :).
I love you guys!!! I am so blessed to have you amazing people as my close friends :).

Hi Mia,

Our friend Vanessa told me about you today and what an inspiration you truly are. My daughter Erin is also a survivor of GCM. She was 14 years old when they found it. She’s now a Freshman in college and about to turn 19 years old in March.

Erin has her own heart but has an ICD, a pacemaker and difibulator. Her friends kid her about being a robot. She thinks their pretty silly.

Just wanted to say thank you for everything you’ve written and shared here. I just read Mia’s latest post and I love hearing from her so much! Mia, you are an amazing girl. I’m so glad to hear you get to go back to school in January. You have such a great attitude about everything. I’ll bet your friends are so excited you are coming back they can hardly stand it!

I wish our families were getting together over the holiday. But I know everyone is so busy. Maybe we could come see you sometime over the break. My 8-yr-old makes sure you are included in every prayer still at our house. You probably barely remember my kids (your second cousins), but they think about you more than you’d know! 🙂

Hi Mia, It just makes me feel so good to see another survivor of Myocarditis! You see, our son died April 18th, 2010 of this. His name was Brad and he was 27 years old. Brad was only feeling bad for 2 days and then started feeling better. The day that he was feeling better his wife found that he had passed away on the couch while she ran an errand. Brad was an otherwise very healthy young man. I hope and pray that you fully recover and live a long and healthy life. To your parents; Cherish your daughter every day of her life. Life is so precious and can be gone in the blink of an eye. Sometimes we question why God does the things he does…in our case I think he took Brad to help spread awareness about this disease. We have been advocates fighting against this and raising funds since the day Brad left us. And I vow to keep fighting to help find a cure until the day that I join Brad. I am so happy for you guys that your little girl is still here with you. There cannot be anything worse than having to bury your child. But like I’ve said to many, you play the hand you’re dealt and make the best of it. In our case to make the best of it means helping others through fundraising and spreading awareness. Your Grandma and Grandpa Brickey (1961 USAF Academy Classmate) filled us in on your remarkable recovery at the “50 years since graduation” reunion of our class last week, Since the “Jack” half of our team has suffered myocarditis, pericarditis, two myocardial infarctions, and a quadruple bypass surgery, we fully understand “affairs of the heart” (medical and emotional). God has been good to us and to you! Congratulations!

PS We love your Grandma and Grandpa. They are so deserving of such a great granddaughter!

Mia, I was diagnosed with Giant Cell Myocarditis five years ago.Against all odds I still have my own heart and I am living a pretty normal life. Don’t let the statistics they give you get you down. You can have a normal life to if you believe it. The most important thing you need is a positive attitude. Hold your head high and no matter what they tell you know that you will get better. If you haven’t seen the movie ” The Secret” have someone get it for you and watch it. If you have any questions feel fre to e mail me anytime. I am also on facebook.

I am a friend of the Fetzer family, and Bobbi shared this wbsite with us. I just wanted to send my prayers for a fast recovery for miss Mia, it sounds like she is a wonderful girl with a great support system of family and friends. God Bless.

We have been overwhelmed with Tom’s message about learning who Mia’s heart donor is. As he said, this is so terribly sad for Mikey’s family, and at the same time, we have our granddaughter who is living because of Mikey’s heart that is beating in her chest. We can’t begin to imagine the grief the Fetzer family is experiencing, and we can’t begin to express the thanks and gratitude we are feeling regarding this priceless gift of life. We know that the Fetzer family can always feel good about Mia and the kind of caring & loving person she is. We wish we had the words to express our thanks for the blessing of this unspeakable gift for our granddaughter.
May God bless each one in the Fetzer family.

The story about Mikey was so sad and heart warming at the same time. What a beautiful gift. I am sure Mikey is smiling in heaven and happy for the miracles he was part of. Thanks for sharing.

it was sooooo awesome to see you again! sorry if I wasn’t as talkative as i was last time :P. it wasn’t you are anything it was just I feel asleep at 1 that night cause that was the night I hurt my finger and I had a migrain, IT SUCKED! And I get a little nervous when talking to the most amazing, strongest, nicest, prettiest, athletic, musically talented, best artist (I saw that map you have to make for World Studies, WOW MAN! That was awesome!) over all wicked awesome person ever (thats you :D!). YOU ROCK! Oh, and looking on the facebook picteres and seeing you wear the bracelet I made you, that just makes me feel so awesome. Like really I can’t even really explain it. It doesn’t seem like alot but it really is a lot for me to see you wear my bracelet, so cool! I miss you a ton and CAN NOT wait to see you again. The last time I saw you I texted Meg (you know the drummer in my grade) she was at coffee garden with some friends and right after you drove away I saw her and a group of my friends running down the side walk to catch you :). Hi Mia and family, Such great news to read about Mia being home and the great biopsy news!!!! I have kept up with your story through my good friend Cyndi Speedy. You and your family are amazing. You have so many angels watching over you.

My daughter had to have heart surgery at the age of 3 – and I was a mess! It was nothing compared to your surgery and issues – but knowing what I went through with that – I cannot imagine how your parents felt. It sounds like you have such a strong family – and with that – and you’re strength – you will do just great!!!

I just wanted to say hi – and let you know how happy I am for you that you are doing so well 🙂 And it’s great to see the community rally for you and your family.

There have been A LOT of people watching, listening, loving, and praying from a distance, and I am one of them. I got to hear first hand from Melissa, Marty, Nikki, and even your mom and dad, how phenomenal you were doing. We all hold you in our hearts and in our prayers everyday, and wear your bracelets and the heart pins, never taking them off. You have made it sweetie!!!! Not that it still won’t be a tough road, because I know that you still have a lot to do, and I know that you have a pretty cool group of people that love you a bunch or as my daughter Mila says ” I love her to Africa”!!! (that is pretty far to her;) ) I have some pretty awesome feathers that are waiting with your name on them to chose and I will put them in your hair:) A fresh start, and a fresh bundle of amazing beautiful feathers:) You just say the work sweetheart and I will send you a picture of a variety, and you choose what ever you want!!!!

Hey there Mia. Was away from my computer for a few days and am amazed and really psyched to hear that you made it home. That is a great accomplishment and one you made happen with your awesome Mia-ness. I am in New England now and when my friends and family ask me how teaching middle-school was last year, I tell them the story of this amazing sixth grade girl whose ability to handle challenge blew me away so much, that my perspective shifted. I haven’t had access to the internet for over three weeks, and have reallly missed reading your dad’s journal and hearing about your amazing progress. You are coming home!!! Tears of happiness are pouring down my cheeks! You are so courageous, determined and inspirational, Mia. You are my hero!

I recieved the most wonderful message from the big T that made me want to cry &/or drive directly to you after 3 days of camping/sweating/irrigating that I decided probably wasn’t the best idea. He mentioned you holding &/or asking about the horse hair & the story behind it. It really is something you can help me with, and I’d love to tell you more about it as soon as you have some time!

I will call our beloved Krista after the office is up & going to get the fam e-mail & phone # to get you a copy of the story, then let’s chat some more. We could possibly bring a couple horses up to visit you all on their way up the canyon in the next week or two. Just to say hi, probably shouldn’t be having you ride down to 7-11 yet. Ha ha.

I LOVE MY LITTLE MIABELLA BRICKEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! SHES MY HERO!!!! you know when people ask you who your role model is? well from now on when people ask me ill say “miabella brickey!” and then they’ll be like who is she and ill say “my best friend!” she may not have telekinesis or can fly or anything like that but she has something so much more powerful…..love. Hi, Brickeys! I just got home tonight from teaching at Gettysburg College (a weaving conference) in Gettysburg, PA. It was a good conference and I had a wonderful class.

I was so glad to get home to cool, sweetly scented air (I think it must have rained before my plane landed) and HOME.
But, I needed to see how all of you are doing before I can go to bed. It has been a long day and now that I know everyone is hanging in there, I can get into my sweet, little bed.

I have experienced it myself. However, it is better than being intubated ! You have a wonderful spirit and so many people love you so unconditionally. Hang in there and be patient- I am sure you are SICK of hearing that ! Better days are ahead.

Mia you are truely amazing..keep fighting..I know its scary. but you can do this..As for Mom & Dad..when you think Wow I cant do this..then you look at her and say if she can do this I can do anything. Im sure you already have a new outlook on life. My son was in the hospital for a month after he was stricken with myocarditis. He too was put on the heart transplant list. He is also a miracle. He beat it..going on 3yrs.It was hard at 1st..who am I kidding it still is for me. nightmares…flashbacks..freaking out when he gets sick..but the new outlook and the happiness of a hug from him is the best..I will contuine to check this site and pray for all of you..Watch how strong you become..and how things that might of bothered you before mean nothing.Its a whole new life. We’ve established a ritual as we pass by Primary Children’s Hospital each day on the way to/from summer camp at the JCC– we raise our fists in the air and shout out a Hearty “Soo Bahk” – we’ll keep the good vibe going for Mia and all of the kids at PCH!

Happy b-day (five days late. Sorry about that). And happy 4th of July (sorry about how late that is also). I’ve tried to write earlier, but I have never had the time to do so. I am sooo happy for all of the progress you are making. Over the past little bit some of the girls from our old soccer team, and some of the girls from your school have gotten together to celebrate and hope for the best for you. We made a photo album for you with all of our faces, and have made pillow cases with your picture on them and your name on them to use as we sleep at night.
I have missed you so much and haven’t posted for so long, so I would like to tell you some things. Well first, I started to do martial arts, but it’s sadly not at the same place that you do Soo Bahk Do. Every time I leave my house to go to my martial arts class though I think of the picture that your parents posted on this website of you kicking that board in half while testing for your black belt. And when I see that picture in my mind, I smile and think, ‘she’ll get through this’. Also when everyone went to Reservoir Park to hope and do breathing exercises with your Soo Bahk Do teacher, I made a friendship bracelet to wear for you, and I still have it on and when it falls off I hope my wish I made before I put it on comes true, and I am pretty sure it will.
Well it is almost ten, so I am going to let you sleep, and I will be thinking about you during the night, hoping that you get better soon.

Gosh I’ve been trying to think of what to say for a long time, but really there are no words to explain how much you amaze me, like for reals! You’re awesome, amazing, athletic, incredible, amazing at everything, funny, gorgous, EPIC, fantastical, e.t.c (note I don’t say fantastical on many occasions). They really need to make a word and mash it all those things together, then times it by 1,000,000,00,000 and maybe that’d come a little close to explain you. I don’t know if that makes sense but . . . ya. and that goes to ALL of your family. Really. You guys amaze the crap outta me!!! (sorry if that sounds weird). but really. It’s like when your dad posted that video I showed it to everyone I got a chance too. and they all cried just like I did. Even the boys, they know they were trying not to ;). but really. I watch that video everyday at least 3 times and I get these amazing tears of joy EVERYDAY, IT’S AWESOME ! ! ! ! and when I saw that you got that tube out I ran around my house screaming of joy telling everyone in my house. they were all super exited too!!! EVEN MY BROTHER SHOWED SOME EXITMENT!!! and boy that means alot. He usually only shows exitment when figures out my dad’s making enchaladas for dinner! You really amazing us, all you Brickeys!!! and I hope you realize how I think about you guys LITTERLY every minute of everyday!! Even when I’m sleeping. I have this dream every night.
I walk into school and I see there’s this huge crowd in Ms.Lowlers room ( but I guess your not a sixth grader anymore 😉 ). I walk in and see your in the middle of this crowd and I run through all of them and give you a hug. I just have to stop for a second whenever I think about it. It gives me this amazing feeling. I’m crying with tears of joy now just because even just through thoughts and dreams, it gives me this indiscribable feeling of happiness by just giving you that hug. I don’t think I can wait to feel that happen in person. Like I better be able to see you soon or else I’m going to explode!!!! I CAN’T WAIT MUCH LONGER!!! But I know your gonna be outta there before I know it. Maybe even as fast as Matt (my bro/the vibes player in the high school band, sorry I know I really didn’t need to explain that) scarfs down my dad’s enchaladas, if that’s even possible to go that fast. but I guess anything people think isn’t possible, is possible for you. You are really my hero of heros Mia. As we watched the fireworks last night, we thought of you, Mia. Hoping you could see them from your room and knowing how many other people were thinking the same thing. Little did we know that another miracle was happening until we got home and read the last two journal entries. What wonderful news and the photo of you sleeping so peacefully says it all. Beautiful photo this morning of Mia WITHOUT the tube! This isn’t a baby step, it’s a giant step. (Mother, May I? Yes, you may! Are any of you old enough to remember that game?)

The fireworks around my neighborhood went on until past midnight last night and now I know why…even if those setting them off didn’t.

I am so glad to see Mia without the endotracheal tube. I can only guess about your relief and her own.

Tom, I love your post about changing or dying. Changing and accepting a different path to life than what I had planned was one of the hardest things for me. Way to go Mia! You should hear the fireworks outside my door right now. I think they’re going off because you got you tube out!! We live a few short blocks from the beach in Santa Cruz, CA and it appears as if every person in the city is lighting off fireworks right now! Celebrating a big milestone in your healing process.

My daughter Maya celebrated her birthday on July 1st – just like you. She turned 14 and is headed to high school in the fall. She is riding rollercoasters right now down at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk. If you and your family ever come to California, come visit us and you and Maya can ride the Giant Dipper! Keep up the good work Mia so you can GO HOME!

We just got back from family event with fireworks…we couldn’t think of anything but you amongst the stars and bursts of light. What a wonderful surprise to get your tube out! We are so happy to hear of all the wonderful things that you are accomplishing! You are awesome, we love and miss you!

I think of you everyday and am grateful for your gift of life. There are not too many of us that get to have two birthday’s! I just had my fourth birthday of my heart transplant. Hooray! It sounds as though yesterday was a good day for all of you and I am so glad. Each good day brings you closer to the great day when Mia can come home with you.

Thanks very much for the photo of Heidi with Mia. It is encouraging to see Mia looking alert. I am guessing that the day–or the one after–that the tube comes out she will begin telling you all about how she wants to be somewhere else.

Still, I am so grateful that PCH is there and that the doctors and nurses who have been caring for Mia and for you are there as well. There have been so many miraculous events.

It was a pleasure to see Heidi and Tom’s parents today as I went in to join the line of blood donors. After nearly two hours it turned out I had a firehose: filled the bag and six vials in five minutes flat!

I was delighted to know that even with that tube in, Mia can express herself by writing about what she wants. (To go home! Yes, I know. That’s what we want for you, too.)

It seems to me that the steps recently are bigger than baby steps and in such a good direction!

I rejoice with every small improvement in Mia’s condition and am still behind the entire family 100%.

You have invaded my dreams. Last night I dreamed I had gone to the airport (don’t ask me why, I don’t know) but I saw your mom and dad ready to board a flight. I asked if you were there and they said “Yes, she’s on the plane already.” So I went on the plane to see you! The plane took off before I could leave. I have been so worried, checking in here, not seeing anything new, praying more, and then checking again. 50 minutes in the PT chair, catching and kicking a ball is SO encouraging.
I can’t begin to imagine how difficult this is for all the Brickeys. I am sending a long, strong, warm hug to all of you as well floods of light and love and waves of healing. I hope it helps a little to know that there are so many of us pulling for all of you!

Happy Monday!! I had the rare honor of beginning my week with a visit with Mia! And I do mean “with”. We talked about Eli’s camp and the MS 150 and the merits of foot rubs versus arm tickles. AND the excitement of her birthday this week. Her vocabulary of head motions and sign language has grown significantly. And she was bright eyed and interested the whole time I was there. What a miracle she is. The nurse and I both had to laugh when Mia needed some “mouth sucking out” done. She grabbed the “sucker thing” from the nurse’s hand (that looks just like what the dentist uses for a similar purpose) and took over expertly. I commented that, after all, she is the daughter of a dentist and hygienist!

I wish you were just I don’t know… BOUNCING out of that hospital!!! I miss you so so so much and want that Lung schmuck OUT OF YOU!!! A couple days ago, Madie and I went into this huge hamster ball down a hill…. TOGETHER. But we both knew it would’ve been wayyy more fun if you were in that tiny hamster ball with us. Even if it wasn’t the… BEST of ideas! 😉 I miss you and love you!!!!

Hello beautiful! Thinking of you. Bet this is tough frustrating irritating aggravating BLECH stuff….and also..loving hopeful uniting caring….
i don’t know about you but some days I just want to scream because I am so angry and frustrated and feel so helpless .. I yell WHY WHY WHY and AARGH….when that happens I turn on some crazy music such as some wild drums…and flail my arms and legs around while yelling (close my windows first so the neighbors don’t freak)….it helps me feel better and I hope that the intense energy I feel flies speedily towards you and is used positively by your body. Other times I feel calmer. I feel so much love and hope and connection to you and this giant network of people who are rooting for you and supporting you and treating you…and then the music I play is smoother…. 🙂 and the energy still flows towards you. Your dad once showed me how to real hug…not “tripod” hug….it’s a much nicer way to share a hug….so I have been doing some virtual real hugging…kind of filling an account….go ahead and withdraw whenever you need or want…I’ll keep filling the hug bank. Sending hugs to you, your family, your doctors, your nurses, your friends, etc… every day….Love you all so much.

It was a beautiful day today. The sun was shining, it wasn’t too warm and I trained at Arete Gymnastics for their gym camp. I keep thinking I will see Eli there, for some reason I am thinking that he moved from USA to Arete.

Every time I see the sunset I think of you Mia. I keep hoping that you will soon be in a condo by the beach watching the sunset.

Just as the sun rises, so does Missy and Grace sending and sounding the FB airwaves, among other’s, of your Mia story.. Your successes of your new Black Belt, your challenge with a sweet heart that got sick, and your fight for all it’s might has become a beacon of hope around the world. Amazing energy is circling you. The arrival of your new heart from a friend you may not meet is an inspiration to us all. Besides the doctors, nurses, the specialists that work with you on your team everyday, there are others besides friends you have never met sending energy, prayers, whatever they can.
When I saw this “heart cloud” from Missy, I dreamed of this the day before. We messaged back and forth and news of the park prayer meeting was at a special time.. We all heard, sent energy to all of you and in our ways. I love the pics your dad posted and saw more of your family, the park, and Missy, & Grace and you in the kitchen. Mia, you are your namesake so beautiful with clear energy and now a bigger team of fans. on that park day and Saturday I went to the ocean and said a prayer.
Dolphins came within a few minutes each time towards me and heard my prayer for your new wealth of health and recovery. I have a photo I would like to send you of the dolphins. It is called “Breathe”………A mama and a baby spouting learning how to breathe, just as you are with your new friend.It is in hospitals as we speak and if someone sends me an address, it is a present for you and your family.We are better people because of your fight for life and happiness. Hello to Mia, Eli, Heidi and Tom,
I live in Colorado and I know of you from my friendship with DeDe, Missy and Grace. My daughter Mia, 6, and her sister Katie, 15, train in Soo Bahk Do with Master Gibbons. My Mia’s class of 5 and 6 year olds learned about Mia tonight and they meditated for your Mia, sending strength, love and energy on this first day of Summer. They all called out “Mia” during their ki haps. It was amazing and gave me goosebumps. At one point they were lined up in 4 lines, forming corners of a square. Opposite corners would jump into fighting stance with a Mia ki hap, then run at each other and do a flying jump kick, land, and keep running to the new corner. Then the other diagonal corners would do it…. two at a time, simultaneously, each little practitioner took their turns. As you can imagine there were some crashes, giggles, and recoveries. It was beautiful. The theme of this session has been courage and they all chatted with Master Gibbons about how much courage your Mia has, and all of you in her family. It was impressive how much love for MiaBella could be felt in the room tonight. Next week they test for the end of the session. My Mia is testing for her first blue stripe, and as she trains this week she will be sending courage and love to you all in Salt Lake City.

As I think of all that you’ve been through, I’m comforted to know that you are being safely cared for, loved and protected by so many talented physicians and nurses. And, of course, Ellie is keeping a close and loving eye on you everyday. Evidently, you and your parents are becoming quite legendary at PCMC for being so strong, graceful, tenacious and brave.

There is a special candle, in our kitchen, that we light each morning … It’s our “Mia” candle. We’re all taking good care of “The Urchin” and your mom and dad. There are so many people around the world lighting their own candles, praying, holding you close in their hearts and sending you good, healing energy. From your Rowland Hall family, to your Soo Bahk and soccer families, to friends you know well, and those who have never met you … You are being loved and supported from near and far.

SKYPE – This is just a suggestion, but when MiaBella reaches the point where she is healthy enough to see her brother, if she has not already done so, since some hospitals don’t permit children to visit, perhaps SKYPE might provide that opportunity for them to see one another. Perhaps her family and friends could visit via SKYPE, when the time comes, putting her in touch with the outside world, but not in danger. I know of other families who have used this method and it worked well for them.

I have returned from helping 300+ gals have a successful week camping, and have just spent the last half hour catching up on Miabella. I can’t even begin to comprehend how completely your lives have changed in the past two weeks.

I was hoping to read that things were going a bit better, a bit easier, and am so sorry to read of the recent hurdles. But I am so INSPIRED and TOUCHED by your love, strength, faith, and fight.

We all continue to think and pray for Mia. I told her story to all my young campers (hundreds of 12-17 year old Lindon girls). It’s amazing to think of the people all over the world who are pulling for her! And the tender mercies of having the best in the world involved in her care.

My heart fills with love when I think of those sweet nurses and techs at PCMC that are taking such good care of her. Bless them all!

I am going to call Aunt Janice later today and try and find out tangible ways our family can help. We would do absolutely anything.

Keep fighting, Mia! You are obviously an incredibly strong and special spirit. Your example of love and strength is touching many, many lives. WE LOVE YOU!!!

Dear Tom,

I have wanted to thank you again for your communications about Mia’s medical status, your family, and your personal reflections on this cosmic turn of events. Your writing is so open and so personal, it helps us feel more like we are with you, at your side where we wish we could be. We look for your messages every day. Thank You.

Since Mia has been in the hospital there has been both a void and an incredible sense of connection. We miss her, yet feel that we carry her with us at all times. I am about to leave for Istanbul and was thinking about whether there is something I could bring back for her to remind her of her travels. I was running a stupid race at 5 am yesterday wondering whether paying respect to the majesty of the moon and sage-covered mountains could channel Mia some of its power.

Our family has a heightened sense of gratitude for each moment together. Supposedly Eleanor Roosevelt said,”The past is history, the future is a mystery, and today is a gift. That’s why it’s called the present.” Presently, I send you and your family my love. I hope this is a good day. You are a great Dad.

Tonight, awaiting the new news, I scrolled through MIa’s photos on the site. One of my favorites is the shot of Mia
with the trombone. Of course, it’s about as tall as she stands on tippy toes.
With the courage that Mia concurred the musical instrument, she has transposed to her handling her medical challenges. My candle is still burning MIa, and my angels that I called in are hovering, I have taken them everywhere in my travels, while I pray for you and think of you every day.

of course you are not okay — it is unfair, and completely at odds with our view of how the world should work that dear sweet Mia would be stricken with such a serious heart condition. I’ve often found myself, as i’ve thought about it over the past weeks, in the untenable and futile position of simply wishing that it hadn’t happened. But it did, my rational mind tells me — it did. And then I think of the fact that you brought her to the hospital — one of the best hospitals in the world — in time. And I am grateful for that, and for the fact that she is a fighter, and that she was born into a family with such deep reserves of strength and love because I know that is helping her. We admire and love you all so much.

Hi Mia, Tom, Heidi and Eli,I just read Tom’s note, and was struck by Heidi’s use of the term “baby steps.” Allow me to explain. In the summer of 1997 I was a senior mountain guide in WA state. During the third week of July, my staff noticed I was feeling out of sorts, kind of moody, and just not myself. I had given them the afternoon off and volunteered to take care of the kids and they went into a little town nearby our basecamp and returned with a healing stone. They said they couldn’t quite put it together, but that something was off in me and they wanted me to know they were thinking of me. It was a sweet gesture, and a few days later sitting atop Mt. Rainier after a tough climb in bad weather that cleared into a gorgeous morning, I took 15 minutes or so to draw a picture with some colored pencils I’d brought along. I began to feel a bit better and the down climb was uneventful.Flash forward six weeks later, and I returned to OH for a week’s visit with my mom and dad before returning to a teaching job in VT for the September term. Within minutes of walking into the house, my mom told me that, during my summer of guiding out west, she had been diagnosed with uterine and ovarian cancer, had surgery, radiation, and was undergoing chemo for the coming 6 months. They had chosen not to tell me as there was nothing I could have done from such a remote location, but only worry. The date of her diagnosis and surgery and commencement of her radiation therapy?….the third week of July. After a heartfelt conversation, my mom excused herself and went to take a nap, the early effects of chemo making her feel tired and nauseous. When my mom woke up later that day, I went to her bedside. I held in my hand the healing stone and the picture I had drawn from atop Mt. Rainier. I explained to her the timing of when I had been given the stone, and the following climb of Mt. Rainier. I explained to my mom, that anyone set on climbing a really high peak, must rely on taking “baby steps,” no more, no less. I remember showing her how slow we walked in the thin air above 14K feet…slow, steady, and intentional “baby steps” that would eventually get me above 20K in Bolivia several years later. I remember holding my mom’s hand, as this once vibrant woman sat under the spell of chemicals that we knew would help her, but that were hard on her body at the time. I remember saying to just take “baby steps” and that she would summit her own mountains in time.Mia, and your entire family are on your own climb right now, and the weather is tough, and the going slow. I can’t imagine the emotions that are rushing within you all. But I do know that Mia is a rock star, and has the guts, strength, and courage to take those “baby steps” as she makes her way towards her own summit. Similarly, you and Heidi and Eli are taking your own “baby steps” as you work to support Mia and each other through this foreign, scary world. The time is 9:15 a.m. right now. I’m on my way up to the nurse’s station. You’ll find in a small envelope four smooth stones. They carry love, spirit, hope, and peace. They are the same kind of healing stones I was given 14 years ago by my friends that summer. As I begin this day my burdens seem light and my blessings many, and know that you are one of these. My thoughts all lead back to you, as this is how we heal together. Few things make me smile as readily as seeing you, seeing you bee-line over to Eliyot and drop right down to his level and light him up with that smile. Seeing you at Soo Bahk train with such intention, making your dad light up. My thoughts are heavy with him, too. He does so many things so well, seeing his people in harms way is not one of them (that’s why we’re lucky to be his people). I take some comfort in knowing he has your mom to keep his feet on the planet. Thank you for this opportunity to revisit and refresh what we truly cherish in this life. I am so grateful for you, be well, little Braveheart.

To THEM Brickeys: I want you to know I spend my meditation time everyday visualizing Mia’s beautiful smile as she runs over the grass after the soccer ball with such grace ,energy and so full of life as I have seen her so many times .  In the last few days I  have spent  multiple times daily sending Mia all the love in my heart in a rainbow stream of energy.Then I go find Natalie and give her a big hug and kiss and tell her how much I love her.
